ARTISTS/STATEMENT
Tom Dalton

Tom Dalton has been a prolific Artist throughout the last fifteen years. He began his career in engineering but grew restless because of a need to work in a more creative way. He used his already learned skills to design bespoke furniture which led him to focusing on public commissions. His most renowned artwork to date is probably the large mirrored tree in a Cork city park which worked as a timely intervention as this dead tree otherwise would have been felled. He has just finished another large commission for Cork City Councils new resource centre in knocknaheeny on the north side of the city.

Statement

Tom Dalton’s practice has evolved over the last fifteen years from designing bespoke furniture pieces to creating large public-art works.
The approach he takes with his public art projects is to absorb the various nuances in that environment and feed this into the work, then by bringing a structured approach to this process using a broad range of material’s he allows these influences create the outcomes for the art he makes.
Dalton’s sculptural artworks have been described as interventions in space or as formal reactions to site. His work can often hint at the surreal by the objects he makes, but possibly not realised fully until placed in their environment while others suggest being influenced by architectural features.
While his work explores the materiality of the sculptural form it brings into focus a tactile quality that highlights the potential magical possibility that each artwork creates in the imagination.
